August 2003: Pick One: Boxer With Heartworm or Pit Puppy With Demodex?

August 19, 2003

I haven't had any fosters since Murray, but I'm supposed to be picking one up this weekend. I don't have the full story on her yet, but they said she's incredibly shy and scared of everyone. She's currently in foster w/another volunteer (a trainer) and they want me to continue working on her socialization. She sounds like she could be a fear biter. (Yay.) Plus Echo is notoriously bitchy with other females. So this could be exciting. On the plus side, they said she likes other dogs. Oh, and they also think she's pregnant, most likely from her brother. Geez, these promiscuous, incestuous little dogs, i swear... =) But they are gonna spay her regardless. But yeah, she sounds like a good project for me. I love working with shy dogs that are just learning to trust people for the first time. Very rewarding.

I couldn't decide which one to take so we just took both. One is a boxer with heartworm and the other is a pathetic looking little pit bull puppy with demodex (a type of mange which they swore was not contagious... I guess we'll find out!). It's been about 5 and a half years since we had a puppy in the house so we are revisiting all those fun puppy things like peeing in the house and biting ankles and chewing on EVERYTHING. =)

Rufus is doing well. He has a vet appt for Sept 8, so we should know more about his condition soon. He certainly seems very healthy! He's very good with the puppy... unbelievably gentle and patient.
